A lot of us want to lose weight but don’t know how to go about things. What and how much we eat is an important question here. Yet many of us resort to dieting without thinking of the consequences. What we need to realise is that just losing those kilos is not what matters, but losing it the healthy way, is of utmost importance.

No Short-Cuts
Weight management is a long-term process and there are no instant remedies. You cannot pop a pill or starve yourself for a few days and expect to be slim forever. Losing weight is just the beginning- maintaining the desired weight is the real task. For that, you need to incorporate lifestyle-related changes and adopt strategies that can be followed for life. It is important to set realistic targets. You may not lose 30 kilos in a month, and even if you do, you are likely to gain it back just as quickly.

Do it Right
Set small targets and stick to them. Reduce the size of your meal helpings, cut down on the sugar in your tea/ coffee or skip that coke you like to have with dinner. Gradually you will find it easier to resist temptation and switch to healthier food. Also try eating a number of small snacks throughout the day instead of three big meals. Studies have shown that eating less more often helps lose weight. Another very important but easy thing to do is to stop eating once you are full. Eat only to fill your tummy, not when you are stressed, bored or lonely.

Of course you must incorporate the age old facts- quit junk food, exercise enough, eat fruits and vegetables and stay away from too much alcohol (especially beer).

And lastly, do not get into fad diets. If you must, consult a dietician first.

Lose Weight With Exercise

There are thousands of weight loss programs everywhere. However, the easiest and the most natural way to lose weight is to exercise. You can diet all you want, but if you just sit around the whole day, you are never going to lose that flab. The benefits of exercising cannot be emphasized enough- if you exercise, you will not only be slim, but healthy too.

Burn those Calories
Weight loss is all about creating a calorie deficit in the body. Therefore the more you exercise, the more calories get burnt and you lose weight. Cardio exercises like aerobics are best if weight loss is your objective. Strength training and lifting weight will not help much as it only tones up muscles. You could start off with simpler ways- like walking, riding a bicycle or swimming. In fact, it is said that walking is the best remedy for excess weight. Engaging in these activities will also refresh and energize you, while keeping you fit and healthy.

Get Going and Stick with It
Exercise helps, but only if you are regular. You can’t jog just one day and expect wonders. Make sure you exercise every day. An hour of brisk walking or half an hour of walking followed by a swim can do wonders. It’s best not to exhaust yourself in the beginning. Move to a higher intensity work out in a gradual manner. You can also join a gym if that’s what works for you, but do make sure that you work out under supervision. For those who easily get bored, joining a fun aerobics or yoga class is a good option. As you get used to a daily work out, you will actually look forward to it. So get up and get going.
